Other than re-hanging the art which will be a 3-4 day process, the rest of the big stuff for the interior must await the arrival of the remaining pieces of new furniture. Among the rearranging parts though were the crystal decanters and they bear a short discussion. For those who have lived in Germany, you know that almost everyone buys some of the beautiful crystal while there and decanters were among the items that I brought back from my first assignment. They did not all survive the multiple moves, but we also received a few as wedding presents. However, once you decant booze, you tend to throw the bottle away and then if you haven’t used the booze up in the decanter when it is time to move again, you either invite enough people over to drink an odd assortment of liquor or sadly, you throw booze away. There is the additional matter of remembering which liquor is in which decanter. So, I got out of the habit of actually using them as other than decoration.
Since a big part of this whole remodel has been because we won’t be moving again for a very long time, it seemed reasonable to bring the practical purpose of the decanters back to life. And as so often happens these days, the internet provided the solution for the decanter labels. I found a place that had the usual sets, but also had individual labels in pewter which is what I was looking for. Voila!, we have properly decanted and labeled booze – notwithstanding the fact that the “Whiskey” one is Jameson’s instead of the Crown Royal that’s still in a bottle in the cabinet. I didn’t see the need to get quite that specific. Considering that most of the decanters are clear, the “white rums” and the flavored vodka are also still in bottles in the cabinet, but you get the idea.
The problem with crystal decanters is that lead from the crystal (which is what makes the glass hard and sparkly) can leach into your alcohol. If you don’t drink the alcohol up quickly, it’s a serious problem.
Ah, then I guess I’ll stop feeling badly about the booze that got dumped since those did tend to be the ones we drank less frequently.
