An interesting lunch with a dear friend who loves the performing arts in virtually all its venues. She is a talented photographer, has an eye for all the visual arts, loves music, theater, and dance. We spoke today of how to find platforms to launch little-known artists and of the unfortunate truth of the arts in that no matter how talented an individual may be, only a small percentage will “make it” – that is “make it” from the commercial aspect of fame and financial success.
This is a reality that one either accepts, or one risks becoming ensnared in bitterness and resentment, unable to appreciate the success of others. That is not to say that individuals who are limited in talent, yet have the lucky breaks aren’t launched into accolades that are undeserved – another reality of life. Let us set those aside, however, and look instead at the talent that exists in so many people. The particular medium is not important – it is instead the “artist” no matter the form – that is key. There is the passion, the drive, the ability to express oneself and to bring pleasure to perhaps only a handful of people who see the painting, photograph, sculpture, read the written word, hear the music, the song, etc., – something that stirs their soul, that lingers with them. And whether it is made widely known or not, it is a gift that has been given and shared.
