There are a surprising number of posts dealing with needs for prayers and also people trying to cope with loss of a loved one. Not too long ago, two friends faced the unexpected loss of their husbands and several of is lost a dear friend, also unexpected just a few months ago. When the almost inevitable question is asked of, “How am I supposed to do this?”, I liken it to driving a mountain road with no guard rail. There are steep climbs, deep descents, blind curves, and switchbacks as well as straight stretches and spectacular views. As I have mentioned before when addressing this subject, when the “Stages of Grief” was popularized, many people erroneously equated that there being both a timeline and straight passages through the stages. Neither is correct.<\/p>\n

The depth of loss is different for every individual. This is where my comparison of a mountain road comes in. How long one is on that tricky mountain road will depend on many factors. Most of us try to “seem okay” as soon as possible with functioning around other people so as to not make them uncomfortable. It is only when around others who have experienced deep personal loss, that you might be able to openly express grief no matter how much time has passed. The other thing I tell people questioning as to if they are “being normal” is to repeat the words my brother said to me all those years ago. “Be gentle with yourself.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
